08/30/2005: "Hurricane Katrina - part 2"
Well, hurricane Ktrina has convinced me that I will never evacuate for a hurricane. The information coming out of New Orleans government is general and hysterical. The media is not timely and focuses on the sensationalistic aspects - recycling the same images for hours. The only reasonable news was from NOLA.com's breaking news.
The president of Jefferson Parish wants to keep all the residents from returning to their home for a week: that's before he's even surveyed the damage! The New Orleans airport is in his parish - is he saying that he has the power to stop all air travel into the area? I-10 goes through his parish - does he intend to stop all the New Orleans residents from going home, too? He's clearly (1) over-reacting and (2) not smart enough to understand the complexities of the situation.
Since our house will (probably) not be flooded - we're six miles from the nearest coast and we're on a slight hill - our major danger comes from downed trees. Our power lines are buried, so no danger of falling power lines. And we can turn the gas off in our house (and our neighbor's houses.)
However, I do know that we'll need (1) lots of batteries, (2) a radio, (3) gasoline for the chain saw to clear out the trees, (4) propane for the grill, (5) lots of water, (6) a hand-crank for the power to a cell phone, and (7) a CB radio with lots of batteries just for it. We'd stay in the neighborhood and (1) help any of our neighbors who need it, (2) survey all our neighbor's houses for them while they're gone, (3) start clearing out the downed trees immediately, and (4) blog hundreds of photos of what the area really looks like - what roads are really closed and how much damage there really is in our neighborhood. I want to provide accurate, extensive information for our neighbors who will be trapped in hotels with only Fox News to tell them whether their Lexus got crushed by a tree.

If you currently pay, say, 6 percent for the mortgage and can get a total refi at 6.5 percent, it might be a much better deal than keeping a small balance first mortgage at 6 percent and getting a second loan at a much higher interest rate. ak morgage rates and money

If you're a homeowner, the recent drop in interest rates has opened up the possibility of big savings on your monthly payments.
